Deze compositie werd geschreven in opdracht van het Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Tokyo ter gelegenheid van zijn 70ste verjaardag in 1994. Wegens de uitnodiging tot deelname aan de Internationale WASBE conferentie in Hamamatsu in de zomer van 1995, werd besloten de premiere uit te stellen en het stuk dan pas voor het eerst uit te voeren en niet tijdens de jubeljaar zelf. -

De Golfoorlog startte met de invasie en de annexatie van Koeweit door het Iraakse leger op 2 augustus 1990. De Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties veroordeelde de bezetting en zette het licht op groen voor het inzetten van troepen (op 15 januari 1991) om Irak te dwingen Koeweit te ontruimen en om de internationale vrede en veiligheid te herstellen. -

Voor de één kan dat de natuur zijn, voor de ander een schilderij of een bepaalde gebeurtenis. De schilderijen van Wassily Kandinsky en de muziek van Dimitri Shostakovich, Hardy Mertens en John Adams zijn een grote bron van inspiratie geweest voor het creëren van Composition VIII.
