The “Teufelsbrücke” (devil’s bridge) is a very old bridge connecting the Göschenen and Andermatt valleys in the canton of Uri, central Switzerland. Legend has it that in the 13th century the people of Uri made a pact with the devil to build a bridge across the canyon.

Wounded Knee portrays in musical pictures the tragic events which took place in 1890 when over 300 Indians perished in South Dakota. The work spans a range of aspects from the spiritual beliefs of the Indians to the fate of the North American Indians today.

The hymn tune on which these variations are based is the third of nine that Thomas Tallis wrote in 1567 as part of a psalter for the first Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, Matthew Parker. It was later used by Vaughan Williams in the English Hymnal and as the basis for his Fantasia.

Dit semiprogrammatische werk over het middeleeuwse Groot-Brittannië – waarvan Albion de oudst bekende naam is – werd oorspronkelijk gecomponeerd voor brassband, maar vanwege het grote succes heeft Van der Roost twintig jaar na de uitgave voor brassband er nu ook een fraaie fanfare-instrumentatie van gemaakt. Koning Arthur, zijn ridders, het heftige strijdgewoel van weleer... al deze elementen komen voorbij, maar ook de lyriek wordt niet vergeten. Koning Arthur bracht per slot van rekening ook vrede en stabiliteit. Al met al heeft Albion bijzonder veel muzikale afwisseling te bieden, waarmee het een verrijking is voor het fanfarerepertoire.

Of Men and Mountains was commissioned by the Netherlands Brass Band Championships for their 10th Anniversary Contest, held in Drachten in December 1990.

The title of the work and its genesis came about as a result of a train journey the composer took in July 1989 across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. The awe-inspiring journey through the Rocky Mountains, with its high peaks and shafts of sunlight breaking through the clouds, with its canyons and ferocious rapids, made the composer understand a little more about the majesty of nature and the fragility of humanity. The eternal struggle between man and nature was personified in the building of this incredible railway, hence the title (after Blake).

The work is dedicated to the memory of Eric Ball, who died shortly before the writing of the work was commenced.

Of Men and Mountains is in one continuous movement and lasts about 17 mins. Its form is difficult to describe because of its motivic and accumulative nature, but it is essentially a symphonic tone poem in search of a theme, which eventually comes in its final and complete state in the majestic ending after an ever-increasing paced scherzo.

Commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and first performed in 1990, a revised contest version was subsequently used as the set-work for the 1992 National Championships of Great Britain. It has since become one of Philip Wilby's most revered compositions and has been performed throughout the contesting world. Although initially inspired by a quotation from the Revelation of St John — "And I saw a New Heaven and a New Earth; for the first Heaven and the first Earth were passed away….", in the composer's mind it subsequently took on an almost allegorical dimension — much like Eric Ball's 'Journey into Freedom'. Revised against a backdrop of huge political change following the demise of the Soviet Union and the domino effect of collapse that occurred throughout former Eastern Block communist countries, for Wilby it came to represent "the triumph of the human spirit over oppression". As he himself wrote: "For a moment, the prophecy of St John's Revelation was suddenly highlighted in a new and quite unexpected way. The off-stage fanfares*, the turbulent nature of a large proportion of the band music and above all, the piece's life affirming end may all be seen as an optimistic vision of that social and religious rebirth".

Aan de basis van dit verplichte werk voor de concertafdeling Brassband WMC 2001 lag de eerbied van Rob Goorhuis voor één van de grootste Nederlandse componisten uit de 20e eeuw die trouwens ook veel voor de blaasmuziekwereld heeftbetekend.

Goorhuis wilde de zachtaardige kant van de brassband belichten en zegt hierover: "De basis is een thema van 12 tonen dat Badings ooit heeft bedacht voor het Internationale Orgelimprovisatie Concours in Haarlem. Mijn orgeldocent nam destijds ook aan dat concours deel en dat thema is op één of andere manier in mijn achterhoofd blijven hangen." De componist bedacht een reeks variaties en clusterde ze in bundels van drie, zo bleef de melodiedivers, maar toch herkenbaar.

De componist, zelf Amsterdammer van geboorte, heeft in dit werkzijn herinneringen aan de toen ook al bruisende stad muzikaal verwerkt in een combinatie met het heden. De geluiden van de stad zoals Goorhuis die in de 50-er jaren hoorde zijn al dan niet abstract weergegeven in Amsterdam.

Amsterdambestaat uit drie in elkaar overgaande delen.

Het eerste deel (Allegro Moderato) beschrijft de grote drukte in de Nederlandse hoofdstad die altijd leeft, beweegt, zindert en schijnbaar nooit 'slaapt'. De voortdurende zestiende beweging in de diverse instrumenten benadrukken die immer aanwezige drukte in de stad die in de volksmond bekend staat als 'Mokum'. Zelfs de klanken van een Amsterdams draaiorgel zijn goed hoorbaar in dit eerste gedeelte. De karavaan vuilnisauto's die elke ochtend om 5 uur door de straat van de nog jonge Rob Goorhuis reed is een hoorbare herinnering aan vervlogen tijden.

Het tweede deel brengt ons in het Vondelpark aan de rand van hetcentrum. Het thema wordt voorgesteld door de bugel en voert via variaties op dit thema in diverse andere instrumenten naar een drukker gedeelte van het stadspark om vervolgens weer kort terug te keren naar de oase van rust. Het tempo en de begeleidende beweging zijn bepalend voor het bijzondere karakter van dit middendeel.

Het derde deel zet ons weer met beide benen in het bruisende hart van de stad. De euphonium introduceert het grillige thema, metkarakteristieke toonladderfiguren en kwartsprongen, dat in de verschillende stemmen canonisch wordt verwerkt.

Between the Two Rivers werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Fanfare Prins Hendrik uit Aalst. De titel verwijst naar het feit dat Aalst tussen twee zijrivieren van de Dommel ligt. Aalst is een streng gelovige gemeente, dus was heteen voor de hand liggende keuze van Philip Sparke om het beroemde lutherse koraal Een vaste burcht te gebruiken als thema voor een viertal variaties. Variation I is een moto perpetuo, Variation II is langzamer en marsachtig van karakter,VariationIII is een sinister langzaam deel en Variation IV heeft tot slot de vorm van een fuga. Between the Two Rivers zal beslist een belangrijk concertwerk worden in het repertoire van blaasorkesten. Het werk is verplichtgesteld op het Wereld Muziek Concours 2005 te Kerkrade.

Abaddon werd gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Noord-Limburgse Brassband (NLBB) uit België. Abaddon is de demon die over het dodenrijk heerst. In het Nieuwe Testament de Openbaring van Johannes (9:11) wordt hij de engel des afgrondsgenoemd.

Het werk Abaddon doet zijn naam eer aan. Het vormt op technisch en fysiek vlak een enorme uitdaging voor elke band in de kampioensdivisie. De compositie heeft een traditionele vormstructuur (snel langzaam snel) en bestaat volledig uitomspelingen van de letters IVAN, naar Ivan Meylemans, de dirigent die sinds 2001 grote successen met de NLBB behaalde en die ook hier essentieel is om de demon in Abaddon te temmen.
