In Trance beschrijft de componist een moeder die haar ongeboren baby hoort huilen. Ze twijfelt of ze het kindje wil houden en brengt dat gevoel over op de baby. Het Bach-koraal Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern ligt ten grondslag aan dit succesvolle werk – dat zich al heeft bewezen in verschillende beroemde wedstrijden.

In dit werk staat een koraal van Bach (Für deinen Thron tret´ ich hiermit) centraal. Anton Bruckner was een fervent bewonderaar van Johann Sebastian Bach. Zijn oeuvre ademt de geest van dat grote muzikale genie. Voor Thomas Doss was het de geest van Bruckner die steeds bij hem leek te zijn terwijl hij aan Spiriti werkte.

EKSTASE gaat over een geesteszieke patiënt die compleet is afgesloten van de buitenwereld. Zijn toestand verergert en door zijn medicijngebruik vervaagt de grens tussen de werkelijkheid en zijn hallucinaties steeds verder.

Time Machine is een reis door de tijd die begint in het stenen tijdperk. De evolutie vindt plaats en de mensheid dient zich aan. Maar de reis gaat verder en neemt ons mee naar het heden: een tijd van desoriëntatie en chaos.

Landscapes is a work structured around two main ideas. On the one hand, the music freely paints some of the superb landscapes I’ve seen during several of my trips around the world.

Brass Cinema is a work containing many extremely descriptive melodies and atmospheres, inspired by the fascinating world of film music. It was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band 13 Etoiles to celebrate their 30th anniversary and is a cinematic masterpiece that will be loved by both performers and audience alike.

This composition by Bertrand Moren presents various dreams which could have an effect on a dreamer’s life. Its very high level of difficulty provides a great challenge for the conductor and musicians.

Wounded Knee portrays in musical pictures the tragic events which took place in 1890 when over 300 Indians perished in South Dakota. The work spans a range of aspects from the spiritual beliefs of the Indians to the fate of the North American Indians today.

Dit semiprogrammatische werk over het middeleeuwse Groot-Brittannië – waarvan Albion de oudst bekende naam is – werd oorspronkelijk gecomponeerd voor brassband, maar vanwege het grote succes heeft Van der Roost twintig jaar na de uitgave voor brassband er nu ook een fraaie fanfare-instrumentatie van gemaakt. Koning Arthur, zijn ridders, het heftige strijdgewoel van weleer... al deze elementen komen voorbij, maar ook de lyriek wordt niet vergeten. Koning Arthur bracht per slot van rekening ook vrede en stabiliteit. Al met al heeft Albion bijzonder veel muzikale afwisseling te bieden, waarmee het een verrijking is voor het fanfarerepertoire.

Of Men and Mountains was commissioned by the Netherlands Brass Band Championships for their 10th Anniversary Contest, held in Drachten in December 1990.

The title of the work and its genesis came about as a result of a train journey the composer took in July 1989 across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. The awe-inspiring journey through the Rocky Mountains, with its high peaks and shafts of sunlight breaking through the clouds, with its canyons and ferocious rapids, made the composer understand a little more about the majesty of nature and the fragility of humanity. The eternal struggle between man and nature was personified in the building of this incredible railway, hence the title (after Blake).

The work is dedicated to the memory of Eric Ball, who died shortly before the writing of the work was commenced.

Of Men and Mountains is in one continuous movement and lasts about 17 mins. Its form is difficult to describe because of its motivic and accumulative nature, but it is essentially a symphonic tone poem in search of a theme, which eventually comes in its final and complete state in the majestic ending after an ever-increasing paced scherzo.

Aan de basis van dit verplichte werk voor de concertafdeling Brassband WMC 2001 lag de eerbied van Rob Goorhuis voor één van de grootste Nederlandse componisten uit de 20e eeuw die trouwens ook veel voor de blaasmuziekwereld heeftbetekend.

Goorhuis wilde de zachtaardige kant van de brassband belichten en zegt hierover: "De basis is een thema van 12 tonen dat Badings ooit heeft bedacht voor het Internationale Orgelimprovisatie Concours in Haarlem. Mijn orgeldocent nam destijds ook aan dat concours deel en dat thema is op één of andere manier in mijn achterhoofd blijven hangen." De componist bedacht een reeks variaties en clusterde ze in bundels van drie, zo bleef de melodiedivers, maar toch herkenbaar.
