Commissioned by the Atlanta Freedom Band, Journey through the Stratosphere is a celebratory work comprising two themes. The opening theme is a soaring melody stated by the trumpets with rhythmic ostinati in the winds. As the main theme passes to the winds, the brass picks up the pulse of the piece.

Leichtes Blut (Light of Heart), is a polka composed by Johann Strauss II. It is a Schnell-Polka, which was influenced by the galop, a rapid, simple dance in 2/4 meter. The title is difficult to translate, for it suggests an easy-going, light-hearted personality, not simply "thin blood."
