The Day Thou Gavest€ 79,00Clement Cotteril Scholefield, die leefde van 1839 tot 1904, was een geestelijke die werd opgeleid aan het beroemde Saint John’s College in Cambridge. Van 1880 tot 1890 was hij kapelaan aan het Eton College en van 1890 tot 1895 was hij vicaris aan Holy Trinity in Knightsbridge.
Als musicus was hij autodidact. Hij bereikte als pianist een hoge graad van bekwaamheid en schreef enige kerkelijke melodieën, die de toets der tijd glansrijk konden doorstaan. De hymne ’St. Clement, beter bekend als ’The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended’ is nog immer een zeer geliefd gezang dat door diverse componisten werd bewerkt.
De onderhavige koraalfantasie op dit thema van de hand van Rob Goorhuis belicht de melodie van verschillende kanten en brengt onverwachte wendingen tevoorschijn.
Het werk werd geschreven ter gelegenheid van de 70ste verjaardag van dirigent Herman Wiegers en aan hem aangeboden door twee orkesten waarmee hij een bijzondere band heeft opgebouwd: Muziekvereniging Nieuw Leven Kamerik en Muziekvereniging Excelsior Cothen.
