De componist schreef deze muziek in opdracht van het Ministerie van Defensie en liet zich inspireren door het gelijknamige gedicht van Ed Hoornik. Het muziekstuk is precies afgestemd op de duur van de plechtigheid, de verschillende kransleggingen en de grote bezetting van de militaire kapel.
