Newton's work functions excellently as the ultimate concert opener, and is characterized by its surprising modulations and beautiful color palette.
The hymn in the middle section is preceded by a quick festive passage that returns at the end. A Tallis Fanfare contains many contrasts and is a rewarding occasional work at various events. After a festive introduction by the entire orchestra, Tallis's leading theme is performed by the trombone section. The ending is a reflection of the beginning; grand and exalted.
