Lithuanian Danceries€194.50
Lithuanian Danceries by Rob Goorhuis was written and commissioned by the Trakai Fanfare Orchestra conducted by Rokas Podelis.
The reason for writing the composition was the 50th anniversary of the orchestra in the year 2025, also the 25th anniversary of the current form of the orchestra.
Rob Goorhuis based his work on melodies from the Lithuanian folk music tradition. The material he used was taken from the Juskas anthology, a very extensive collection of hundreds of melodies, from which Igor Stravinsky drew material and inspiration for his Sacre du printemps.
Antanas Juska, who lived from 1819 to 1880, was a lexicographer and folklorist who studied at the Vilnius Theological Institute. He noted down about 7,000 folk songs, which he recorded from the mouths of fellow countrymen. His work is comparable to that of composers such as Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, who traveled through the Hungarian country with their recording equipment to save the national anthem from oblivion. Five folk songs were processed and varied in a free manner by Rob Goorhuis. Typical Lithuanian techniques were also used, such as the Sutartine, a polyphonic improvisation.
